2020-11-24
November, 2020
Research by Uta Schönberg, Kirill Borusyak and Clara von Bismarck-Osten shows that school closures have not been effective at containing the spread of SARS-COV-2 in Germany. Leveraging the variation in the timing of school holidays across the 16 federal states in Germany, it shows that the summer and autumn holidays have not had any significant impact on the spread of the SARS CoV-2 in Germany. Moreover, the return to full schooling after the summer holidays did not lead to an increase in the number of infections.

Research led by Uta Schönberg and CReAM alumni Barbara Boelmann and Anna Raute shows that more than 20 years after reunification East and West German mothers still largely behave according to the different norms of divided Germany. However, through migration, the East German culture also affected the behaviour of West German mothers. East Germans, on the other hand, continue to behave according to their upbringing even after they have been in the West for a long time.
